What the Dolphins letters stand for:
Determination, Ownership, Love, Professional, Honesty, Invest, Now and Student

“The 8 habits of successful athletes in Training, in Competition & in Life”

D: Determination:  to achieve my best every day. Swimming is a long-term sport in an instant gratification world. Swimmers who understand and embrace that it takes time, and are willing to commit to this are the ones that I look for.
O: Ownership:  to accept responsibility for my failures and not to blame others. Can you adapt to any situation and make it work for you, without losing your focus or blaming others?
L: Love:  of the sport in general, and swimming specifically. The primary reason athletes succeed in sports is they have a love for the game. You love how you feel when you train. Too many swimmers think that just turning up to the pool automatically equates to best times. Just going to school every day doesn’t guarantee you will be an honors student!!
P: Professional:  means you act in a way that will always show you are working to be your absolute best and you make the right decisions about what needs to be done. An example may be resting when you need to recover and resisting the temptation to do things that will not aid your recovery (either during your heavy training blocks and or in your build-up to a competition or at the competition). Being professional can include a wide variety of choices such as nutrition and eating the right food etc.
H: Honesty:  with your coaches, your supporters, and yourself. This is not about just telling the truth about why you missed practice. All coaches are constantly evaluating each swimmer and the program. In order to make an honest evaluation, coaches need honest feedback from the swimmers.
I: Invest:  do more. Each time you put in a little extra effort during practice, you are making a deposit in your vision account. The more you put in, the more your talent or skill will grow.
N: Now:  “The Power of Now”  the importance of living in the present moment and transcending thoughts of the past or future. Remember that you are in total control of what you are doing Now.
S: Student:  learn from the coaches. Swimmers that are willing to be coached and not just trained usually do the best. Too many swimmers, when given feedback, will start the response with “but”….always rationalizing their actions. As much as he had his faults when it came to stroke correction Lochte only had to be told once. Some of the most intelligent swimmers were still being told the same thing 9 months later.
