Swim Scholarship Eligibility
There are 4 sources of athletic financial support for the UofR Cougars swim team.
Cougars swimmers generally receive from $1,000 (walk-on recruit) to $10,000 (U SPORTS and Academic All-Canadian) per year in scholarship.
Provincial Sport Governing Body Awards (PSGB)
- Provided by Swim Saskatchewan
- Eligible swimmers receive $1,000
- Everyone that is consuming eligibility will receive this (subject to an award cap of 21 swimmers)
Academic All-Canadian Scholarships (AAC)
- Contributed by the university and matched by Swim Saskatchewan
- Awarded swimmers receive $1,000 ($500 from UofR, $500 from Swim Sask)
- Swimmers that used eligibility and maintained an 80% average get this next year (paid in year 2 if you get the marks in year 1, etc.)
University of Regina Varsity Sport Awards / Departmental Awards (URVSA)
- Paid for out of the team’s scholarship budget (allocated annually)
- Swimmers can receive up to tuition and fees, subject to performance+budget
- Athletic Entrance Scholarship (AES) - part of URVSA
- New student, no entry average requirement, at head coach discretion
- Academic and Athletic Achievement Award (AAAA) - part of URVSA
- Returning student, average 65% or higher, at head coach discretion
- So academics makes you eligible, but funding is from athletic performance.
- Current model is U SPORTS gets 8 shares of the pot, +1.5% gets 6 shares, +3% gets 4 shares, +5% gets 2 shares, +7.5% (CanWest) gets 1 share, and Roster swimmers get 0 shares (but they do get a spot on the team, subject to coach discretion). This allows for continuing recruitment according to the level of the team.
Cougars Swimming Athletic Award / Emergency Bursary (CSWIM)
- Drawn from the team’s Fundraising account
- Unlikely to be used unless there was an excess of funds and severe need
- It is unlikely that anyone will receive funding from this source
So for example:
A walk-on recruit that meets the Roster standard (currently U SPORTS + 10%) would receive $1000 from PSGB (subject to team limit of 21 athletes receiving this), they would be eligible to get $1000 from AAC if they get an 80% average in their first year, and they could receive additional money from URVSA if their performance improves closer to the U SPORTS level. Total is $1000-2000 (assuming academic eligibility).
A Canada West swimmer (U SPORTS + 7.5%) would receive $1000 from PSGB, plus or minus $1000 from AAC if they have an 80% average in the previous year, and receive 1 share of URVSA funding. If there are 30 total shares in their gendered team (Men or Women) and the team pot is $30,000, this represents $30,000 / 30 shares x 1 share = $1,000 of URVSA funding. Total is $2000-3000 (assuming academic eligiblity and consistent share worth).
Swimmers between Canada West and U SPORTS will receive from 1 to 8 shares of URVSA funding, depending on their performance level (U SPORTS + 7.5%, 5%, 3%, 1.5%, or qualified). This could total from $2000-$10,000 (8 shares of URVSA, $1000 from PSGB , and $1000 from AAC).
